Pick me or pick me not.

Today I’m discussing when you should pick flowers & how it affects longevity & lifespan.

As a professional florist I have been taught some important aspects of floristry mechanics when training with floral art school.

It is important to know key aspects of dos & donts when it comes to flowers & how to apply techniques that help with longevity of your blooms, from when they are first picked, to when they are arranged.

Today I’m going to share my valuable knowledge with you & help you understand a few key practices to assist you .

What is the best time to pick your own flowers.?

Timing is everything in life & most importantly it certainly affects your blooms when you are ready to cut flowers from your home gardens .

Ideally you have to consider how time of day & conditions affect the quality.

Best time of the day is morning or evening.

Preferably morning times are best , why ?.

Flowers have reserves in the stems that contain sugar, and the sugar is at its peak in early mornings & late evenings.

Flowers draw moisture through to the stems over night with the cool moist air , therefore the stems have retained water & this helps with keeping flowers fresh from the cutting process to the point of where you will arrange the flower, etc, vase or bucket.

When not to pick & why ?

Don’t pick your flowers midday or later in day when sun is the hottest.
Don’t pick your flowers midday or later in day when sun is the hottest.

Why ?

Heat absorbs moisture & will dry out the water that is retained in the stem & cause the flowers to decay faster & not last as long.

Do not delay in getting the fresh flowers to the vase or bucket , the quicker you replenish the stems , the longer your flowers will last & you will have beautiful flowers for many weeks to come.

Hope you have enjoyed reading my latest blog & come back for more important articles on flower care & blooming topics.
